Population Survey on Drinking in Korea


Abstract
This study was done to identify the reality of drinking and alcoholism and its relating factors in Korean, and to discuss on its treatment and nursing interventions.
The six hundreds and fourteen, over 20 years of age, were sampled by random stratified sampling method. To collect the data, the subjects were interviewed by telephone.

The results of the study were as follows ;

1. Most of respondents had drinking experiences (86.8% ), and drink more than once in a month(67.7%) in habit, ranged 51 to 199 times in a year, but had been in drunken .for 1 to 2 days (16.4 %) .
The number of drinking even one glass during the last one month was 1 to 4 times(60% ), the total amount of drinking during the last one month was less than. 3 glasses(49.5% ). and Soju was mostly consumed (59.0% ).
2. In their attitudes toward drinking, the respondents answered to `all right if only not large amount¢¥ was 42.7%, and to `all right if only not drunken¢¥ was 32.4%, which showed relatively positive tendency.
3. Some of the respondents were identified as `alcoholism¢¥ by NAST (6.6 % ), AUDIT(44.7% ), and MAST(7.0% ).
4. By AUDIT, between problematic alcohol user and non-problematic alcohol user, the significant differences were showed in their general characteristics, such as, sex (p = .000) , residence (p >.001), religion (p -.000), occupation (p = .000) , and marital status (p = .000) .
